Sunrise at Leesylvania State Park
A few weeks ago, I decided that I would join a group of photographers for a sunrise shoot at Leesylvania State Park. Keep in mind, this was scheduled more than a month in advance and I had NO idea that the weather was going to be as cold as it was.
The night before the planned shoot, I looked at my phone for the hour-by-hour weather forecast (what would we do without our smart phones!!!) and saw that the sky has great potential for a good sunrise, BUT it was going to 9 degrees at 6am! BRRRRRRR. I decided that I still wanted to go and not lose out to a potential beautiful sunrise and regret it if I would not go.
Funny enough I had no issues waking up at 5am that Saturday morning, so I got my layers of clothing on, grabbed some coffee and hit the road. Lucky for me, Leesylvania State Park is only a 30 minute drive from my house so I was there in no time. I arrived a little after 6am and found about 7 fellow photographers who also braved the cold. As I got out and grabbed my gear I could already see that the sky was looking promising, and although is was cold, REALLY cold, I was excited! We all walked to the pier near the Potomac River and got set up and started shooting.
You can see, we started out with a darker blue/purple sky and a peach and orange hue earlier in the morning. This was the early sign for us that this sunrise was promising to be a good one.
If you look closely you will notice that the Potomac River is partially frozen and besides the fact that is was 9 degrees the wind was also blowing near the Potomac River, to add to it. But all of us who were there weren't really complaining about the cold much as we were exciting to see the constant changes in the sky!
I will try to follow with the range of color from the sunrise.
Here you notice it is already getting slightly lighter in the sky, the orange is getting deeper, and notice the snow on the ground too!
As the time passed the colors became more vivid with reds & purples. It was truly amazing to see and i think we all forgot we were cold!
You will see the color of the sky constantly changing as the sun comes up....
Final image just before the sun rose, therefore lots of yellow and orange in the sky!
By 7:15am the sun was fully in the sky and I was ready to pack up and go to the car so I could warm up.
All in all, I am glad I went and joined some of my fellow photographers on this early morning sunrise. I will certainly go back again soon, hopefully in warmer weather!
